Sweet. I've always wanted to get into that... My gran made dishes and stuff, I think she used molds for them, but I still have some dishes and a couple of little knick knacks... She was good with rugs, too... and other stuff... I miss her.
I was an art Ed major with a focus in ceramics and 3d before I switched majors, then took a break -- BUT
I COULD FEEL THE COLD CLAY when you were talking about the drying process......
My favorite part of the throwing process was always centering ....I have 0 idea how the hell anyone would do it with a kick wheel, I don’t have the time or leg power for all that
I used to get so full of clay anytime I threw, and people would be like “um, why are you so dirty” and I’d just laugh...I never really cared cause I kinda liked wearing my mess hahaha
My brother had a pottery with kick wheels and a wood burning brick kiln that he built. I never tried them. I felt all the water used to throw and the sound removed me from the clay when using an electric wheel.
I would love to be in the mess of it though!!!
There is mud season where I live. I think it has to do with the depth of the soil and it's content. I've heard it's good for pots. Be fun to play with. It's horrifying for driving!!! (I live on a dirt road)
I haven’t thrown in so long or even touched Clay but it’s the best medium IMO - possibilities are endless AND THE RISKS ARE SO HIGH!!!!! Can crack or blow up in the kiln
Ugh i love clay i could talk ab this for eeeeeons
I would love to learn to fire differently so the clay still feels organic. I am overwhelmed by the science of it, but love the feel and play if it without the rest.
"The possibilities are endless and the risks are so high"
It would be wonderful to be in a room of makers, making!!!
There is this awesome art center in a cool town near me. I was so excited to move up here and explore. But you have to be vaccinated to go there. And it's just not something I'll do. :-(
That is such an extensive process I cannot imagine how much work that took your brother...?!?!?!!!!!!
The only person I knew that built their own kiln was my college professor ,, he built an underground one !!
I switch majors to communication studies and I also switched universities - BUT! My first public speaking speech ever in college was about how to throw clay on the wheel.
The electric wheel is a lot to handle but it really just happens with practice ...took me a couple months to get my first pot DOWN, but then once you get your rhythm you kind of become one w the wheel and it’s like driving ...
That's a very good question, I'm sure if I looked into it...I'm also 99.9% positive my teachers would let me come throw....when you're in an 'art family' , anyones really willing to share resources or go do things / experience things together...art is lovely in that way
If I ask I'm sure I could, if I wanted to go to Vermont for a couple months to throw at a pottery studio I could too...I'm just lazy...maybe I should though
Thank you for sharing Elizabeth.
You're welcome.

That's so sweet that you have her pieces and that you loved her ❤️ What kind of rugs did she make? Braided, hooked...?
I bet you really miss her now. I'm sorry!
Woven rugs, on a loom. Why be sorry? ^_^ I had her a long time. She lives in my heart.
Oh, I'm glad she lives in your heart! Wonderful.
Oh woven rugs cool!!!

Yeah he's pretty unusual. He designs and builds pianos now.
Yeah I imagine that it's wonderful to feel the rhythm of the work of it and be one with the clay and the wheel.
Do you have the option to throw again?
If someone put a wheel infront of me I'd go crazy.
my parents bought me clay one year for Christmas, that's how hard I loved that shit hahahahahahah
Can you buy a wheel?
